Grow | Leadership Retreat

Developing people is a passion of ours and this retreat gives us the opportunity to grow deeper with God, ourselves and one another.

Here are the broad brush strokes:

1. The retreat is March 5-6 and involves an overnight stay at Highland Lakes Baptist Encampment in Spicewood, Texas on Lake Travis. I have been to this retreat center many times and it offers lovely views of the lake and hills.

2. The cost is $40 for a single and $60 for a couple. This covers one night's stay, two meals (breakfast and lunch on Saturday), and a copy of StrengthsFinder 2.0 for each person, which is one of my favorite books and an integral part of our retreat. More on that later.

3. The event begins Friday, March 5th at 7 pm, with registration beginning at 6 pm. We will have 2 sessions Saturday and end at 3 pm.

4. We have space for the first 64 people (32 men and 32 women), and registration is beginning to fill up.

5. One of our main priorities is to make this as affordable for the largest demographic possible. Even with our current low registration cost, the church will still be underwriting a somewhat significant portion of the overall cost. In order to be able to charge such a low amount and offer our singles and students an opportunity to participate, we felt the event should be priced where it is.

6. Because of this, we are going camp-style with our accommodations! The men and women will be housed in separate bunk rooms for the one night. For some of our married couples, this will be a downside, and for others, this will offer sweet relief (kidding, of course). So, our men can get to know each other better, and our women can talk...and then talk some more (more kidding).

7. We will have three main sessions, the first of which is of most interest for you right now. Some of you may be familiar with the "StrengthsFinder" test. For those who are not, it is a test, based on 20 years of research by the Gallup organization, designed to detect your innate talents and give them a specific vocabulary. Of all the "personality" and "leadership" tests I have ever taken, this one has been by far the most useful to me as an individual in terms of self-discovery and relationship building.

We will be providing those who register with a copy of "StrengthsFinder 2.0", which has a code for the online test you take. We will be compiling the results and presenting them to the group the Friday night of the retreat. I have done a number of group profiles and countless individual profiles with this test before, and it never fails to provide an opportunity to be encouraged, learn about yourself and...gently laugh at one another. It is especially helpful for married couples...think of it as a marriage and leadership tool all in one (it has significantly helped Carrie and me over the last few years. Now she understands all my strangeness! Well, maybe not all of it...).
